StoryBoard

In class we made our first draft of our storyboard. These are rough sketches of clips we wish to include within our teaser trailer in which we will develop into an animation for it to be clearer for us before we begin filming. Here are our sketches in order in which we scanned in to help us to our idea of our filming schedule and it's structure.

1.

After watching various teaser trailers we noticed that there is an legalisation certificate used before the trailer is shown. We understand that this is especially used for american films however we thought we could adjust the british layout with the age certificate shown also.
In these opening shots we felt we should experiment with various different shots to create a tense environment foreshadowing the genre of the trailer.

2.
We felt the best way to portray these shots, was to  animate stills by editing them as fast moving jump cuts.  This would allow us to estimate the length of our trailer and further more incorporate each jump cut to a beat in the accompaniment.

3.
In the first clip we thought we would include a extreme close up of Lucy's hand on the banister of the school stairs.  As it's a sudden contrast to the surrounding shots.  We hope that this will show the intensity she is feeling through the tight grasp of her hand.
Here we also begin to add in Credits/titles referring to the story line and teasing the viewer.

4.
In this part of the trailer, repetition of the eyes are included to readdress the fact that Lucy is still is a matter of a dream like state.
Rhetorical questions have been added to involve the viewer with the story and create a fast pace thought pattern.

5.
We will design our own title using 'photoshop'.  We  will also include a web address at the bottom of this shot to advertise the film further.

Synopsis

A new transfer student called Lucy Derwen starts a new term at Longleep Park School for Girls, where she struggles to fit in.  She finds comfort in the library of the school where she finds new novels to read.  One particular book catches her eye and turns out to be a diary from a previous student who she finds out later died in her late school years.  She decides to keep the book a secret.  As she begins to read the diary she discovers that this girl named Ruth was troubled at school.  The occurrence of this dairy leads to a series of traumatic and haunting nightmares which mentally encourages Lucy to try and take her life.

Character name plan

A spider diagram of name suggestions for our teaser trailer! Focusing on the two main characters being the new student girl and the spirit child haunting the other child :)

After brainstorming these ideas as a group we decided to choose the name of the main girl who gets haunted being called 'Lucy' as we believe it would be easy to whisper (the haunted child) as it is short and easy to say. Furthermore, it has a innocence to the name ideal for a young child who would be victimised by the spirit.
For the ghost spirit we focused on old fashioned names such as Jane and Eleanor. However, after debating we have decided to call her 'Ruth'. This is appropriate as has a old fashioned feel to the name appropriate for the diary and time period she would've lived in. Also we can picture a child called Ruth at that age, matching the child's look we have pictured; pale and young.

We have asked children in the lower years if they would like to be in our A2 teaser trailer and they happily agreed. We have two young girls in year 8 which we feel would look appropriate for these parts and are both theatrically talented suiting the two main characters.

Influences

For our trailer we have finally concluded that we will be making a teaser trailer of the genre; horror/thriller. After researching this genre we discovered various trailers which displayed this theme well and therefore influenced our ideas.

Influence as a genre:
Below is a teaser trailer promoting 'Paranormal Activity 2'. This relates to our theme as the storyline is reasonably similar to ours involving dark spirits and children. Its dark storyline and the way it's genre is shown has helped our initial thoughts develop in how we wish to present our teaser trailer. Therefore we thought this teaser trailer represents it's genre well.

Influence as a structure:

As audience members viewing this trailer for the first time we found it very enjoyable and successful. This is why we believe it could be influential for us when editing our teaser trailer.  Its structure is very fast and dynamic flicking between clips. However, there are repeated clips shown throughout adding to the suspense and thrilling atmosphere it created, not showing too much of its storyline. Furthermore, music plays a large part in this trailer becoming more distorted and louder towards the end making the viewer feel discomfort. Large titles were used adding to the style of the film making it clear to the audience its effect on viewers and were placed between short clips to add to it’s impact.

Influences as micro aspects (sound, costume, shots):

We thought that 'The Children' would be an ideal influential trailer as they use juxtaposition with the sound; for example, in the beginning sequence, there is upbeat and joyful Christmas music and it fades out into a stereotypical child's music box whilst there are clips of violence.
The way that the children are dressed in this trailer is similar to our idea of how we would like to cast our members, due to their age.

We have print screened some shots that we felt were eye catching and suited our idea well. We decided we liked this shot as we believe it could be used when the ghost child is watching the student sleep. In this image it represents it for the same purpose similarly to 'The Orphan's' shot:

'The Children'

'The Orphan'

'The Omen' is also influential as this teaser trailer also helps us give the ideas of costume, mise en scene, shot (rule of thirds), sound and shows the clear genre. We think because of the lack of dynamic it gives a creepy feel mixing child innocence and thriller through these aspects. We particularly like the fact that the child is on a swing which creates an eerie sound, the costume being children clothing and the lighting being dim but not completely dark so can focus directly on the child with direct address creating suspense.

This idea is similar to 'The Orphan' with the idea of suspense and child innocence:

More Ideas..

After writing our pitch, we came up with some key ideas developed from the spider diagram.

Initial Ideas

We were always interested in making our project a thriller contrasting to our last project; a light hearted comedy. Furthermore we agreed that we could create some interesting shots within our teaser trailer with our choice of genre and our storyline. Here is a spider diagram with our ideas for our Teaser Trailer.

A brief synopsis of a our teaser trailer.

When a young girl discovers a mysterious diary in her school, she is overcome by an unwanted spirit leading to a series of horrifying nightmares.

Moodboard

We took some print screens of the different shots from teaser trailers we have watched; we thought that they matched our theme and idea of horror. The running theme throughout was children as that's what idea we're heading towards. Trailers we have got inspiration from include 'The Children', 'The Orphan', 'The Shining', 'Insidious' and 'The Orphanage'.

What is a Teaser Trailer? :)

After watching various different 'teaser trailers' we are now able to establish the difference between a standard trailer and a teaser trailer.

The trailers we watched were:
-'The Human Centipede II (full sequence)
-'Green with Envy'. The Muppet's.
-'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo'
-'The Twilight Saga 'Breaking Dawn' Part 1.'
-'Arthur Christmas'

After watching these different trailers with different structures, we noticed that they had these things in common:
- Teaser trailers don't give away the film's storyline making the audience want to know more about its plot and whats involved within the film.
- Each consist of clips in which have been edited purposely so are short/quick in a continuous phase therefore gives the audience a idea of the films genre and continuing the trailers pace.
-The trailers we watched were quite short (shorter than an usual ordinary trailer) adding to the idea of the trailer being a 'tease'. For example, 'The Twilight Saga 'Breaking Dawn' part I' is only 15 seconds long focusing particularly on the wedding which the film is specifically revolved around.
-The music of the film relates to the film's genre therefore it had been carefully thought of to draw the audience into the trailer in hope for them to wish to watch the film.
-Playful structure with the sound, editing and titles.
-The titles were not reviews or quotes which a viewer created but are more persuasive for example, 'The Human Centipede Part II reads 'Has Horror Gone Too Far?'.

Also, in two of the trailers we watched there was use of direct address which is used to intrigue the audience into watching the trailer. This was used in 'Arthur Christmas' particularly and 'Green with Envy, the Muppets'.

The music in this trailer 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' is really effective. Especially towards the end as it becomes more distorted when the camera gets towards the house showing that the house is important and creates and eerie atmosphere. Furthermore this trailer consists just of quick footage of the film however not showing much of the storyline to us audience members making it harder for us to understand nevertheless making us want to watch it.
